A separate computer means there is zero impact on my frame rates. I run the software on an old, obsolete computer (running Windows Vista) which is connected via network to my flight sim computer. Air Manager can also work on an iPad or other tablet computer.Īir Manager is very versatile, see it above with the DIY Deluxe Desktop Flight Sim. Flat panel computer monitors are so cheap that I literally have 3 in my house just waiting for a project. What I mean is, a totally separate monitor that is set aside for just the flight instruments. I’ve personally used Air Manager for displaying the flight simulator instrument panel on a separate screen. More about that here.Īir Manager with the DIY Deluxe Desktop Flight SimĪir Manager $77.00 + separate monitor or computerĪir Manger works with Prepar3D, X-Plane 9, 10, and 11, FSX and FSX Steam. However, there is a way to make FSX save the flight simulator instrument panel settings by using a handy freeware utility. That’s all great, except FSX does not save these settings on exit, and you have to set up all your views again the next time you turn on your computer. For example, you could show the outside view on all three monitors, and then in the bottom of your middle screen, show smaller windows with the flight instruments. This trick also works with multiple screens. You see how this appears in the picture above with the DIY Flight Sim Pod. then FSX will display different windows that you can move around your screen. When you type Shift+1, or Shift +2, Shift+3, etc. You can move and resize the 2D windows in old FSX and FSX Steam. Native FSX instruments in the DIY Flight Sim Pod In conclusion, TrackIR is very useful but it’s still difficult to use with a GPS or other instruments that require fine tuning. It works with a very wide variety of titles: Prepar3D, X-Plane, FSX, Flight Sim World, DTG Flight School, DCS World, even Elite Dangerous, War Thunder, IL2, and many others. TrackIR works with a single screen, or multiple screens. The picture above shows TrackIR with the DIY Deluxe Desktop Flight Sim. You can also look out the windows, look over your shoulder, look around struts and other parts of the airplane. As a result, you can lean into the flight simulator instrument panel if you want to see something closer. Instead of explaining all 6, I’ll just say your real life head also moves in 6 degrees of freedom, and leave it at that. TrackIR “sees” your head move in 6 axes, also called 6 degrees of freedom. It is a view tracking device that allows you to look around the virtual cockpit by moving your head. I’ve used TrackIR from Naturalpoint for a long time. TrackIR with DTG Flight School and the DIY Deluxe Desktop Flight Sim It’s up to you to decide which flight simulator instrument panel works best with your particular needs. You have a few options to choose from and each has its own benefit trade offs. Today I’ll focus on viewing the flight instruments. Developers struggle to create software that displays a legible flight simulator instrument panel, and also present a realistic outside world with scenery that stretches to the horizon.

As the Denver Post reports, Millennium Partners is insured to cover around $100 million in damages caused by settlement or construction defects with the policy split among several insurers. The TJPA has also denied the allegations.Īnother development has arisen that may add to the collective headache of Millennium Tower residents. If the TJPA is found to be at fault, San Francisco taxpayers may find themselves on the hook for covering the building’s repair costs. The TJPA has also been named in the residents’ suit due to the construction of the new rail terminal. Both Millennium Partners and the city deny the allegations. Furthermore, they believe Millennium Partners hid the building’s faulty structure from buyers, saying the city’s administrators also helped to conceal the engineering flaws. According to experts that have continued to do site inspections, Millennium Tower is still safe to live in, but that hasn't stopped a group of more than 20 residents from filing multiple lawsuits against Millennium Partners, the City of San Francisco, and the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA).Īccording to the Denver Post, the 20 or so residents, who collectively paid around $75 million for their condos, allege that Millennium Partners knew the building had sunk 8.3 inches into the ground as early as 2009, just one year after the building was completed. Over the past few months, things have certainly not gotten any better for the ailing tower or its frsutrated residents. To this point, the cracks that have appeared in the walls due to the building settling have all appeared in the parking garage, and no damage has occurred to any of the units. While safety is a major concern to residents, many are also worried about the issue affecting property values. Millennium Partners spokesman says the building was built correctly and other buildings in the area, such as the Intercontinental and St. The transit authority released a statement saying the building would not be tilting today if it had been anchored to bedrock. Instead of driving piles about 200 feet down into bedrock, they were instead driven 60 to 90 feet down into dense sand. They say the real reason for the issue is due to Millennium Partners cutting corners to save money. Transbay Joint Powers Authority, however, is pointing the finger back at Millennium Partners, saying the building had already sunk 10 inches before construction on the terminal even began. To build the terminal, Transbay dug a 60-foot hole to create a dry construction site and pumped out millions of gallons of groundwater, which compressed and weakened the soil under Millennium Tower. Millennium Partners is blaming the issue on the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, saying the construction of their new rail terminal is to blame. Even so, the spokesman says the seismic performance has not been affected and the leaning and sinking does not represent a safety risk. The tower has also tilted by two inches at the base and about 6 inches at the top.Īccording to, a spokesman for Millennium Partners, the building’s developer, says some sinking was expected, but the 16 inches is almost three times more than what was originally predicted. But that is exactly what many residents are beginning to do after the tower has sunk 16 inches since its completion in 2009. But the odds are, what they weren’t expecting was the need to question whether or not their new living arrangements were safe. When residents of San Francisco’s Millennium Tower plunked down the cash (sometimes as much as $10 million) to live the 58-story building, they were probably expecting their new home to be packed with amenities and luxuries to make their lives as easy as possible. Not long after forming the Standard Oil Company in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1870, John D. The 42-gallon standard oil barrel was officially adopted by the Petroleum Producers Association in 1872 and by the U.S. Within a year of Drake’s discovery, oil barrels were commonly considered to hold 42 gallons according to “The Oil Fountains of Pennsylvania” in Littells’ Living Age of September 1860.īy 1866, these abundant tierce-sized barrels were the logical choice to become the industry’s standard measure. Twenty would fit on a typical barge or railroad flatcar. Bigger casks were unmanageable and smaller were less profitable.Ĭontemporary photographs show cooperages’ prodigious response to the new demand. When filled with crude oil instead of fish or other commodities, a 42-gallon tierce weighed more than 300 pounds – about as much as a man could reasonably wrestle. The petroleum boom that followed it consumed wooden tierces, whiskey barrels, casks and barrels of all sizes. Drake ’s 1859 oil discovery at Titusville PA., the first commercial U.S. The 42-gallon barrels became familiar 19th century containers. Standard Oil will introduce a steel version of the 42-gallon oil barrel in 1902 with the same traditional bilged, cask-like appearance.īy around 1700 in Pennsylvania, practical experience and custom had made the 42-gallon watertight tierce a standard container for shipping everything from eel, salmon, herring, molasses, soap, butter, wine and whale oil. Technologies for making watertight casks replaced “tight” coopers and their guild of Worshipful Company of Coopers. Their guild, the Worshipful Company of Coopers, prescribed the manner of construction. Lesser skilled craftsmen (known as slack coopers) made casks, barrels, and pails for dry goods. Long before England’s King Richard III defined the wine puncheon as a cask holding 84 gallons and a tierce as holding 42 gallons, watertight casks of many sizes were crafted by “tight” coopers. Hoop mills operated day and night supporting cooperages that sprang up to join in the oil boom in what would later be called “the valley that changed the world.” Meanwhile, as derricks multiplied, forests along Oil Creek were reduced to barrel staves by recently introduced barrel-making machinery. Rugged northwestern Pennsylvania terrain and muddy roads added to transportation problems. To reach railroad station and docks, teams of horses pulled wagons carrying as many as eight barrels of oil. Although pipelines would later challenge the oil region’s teamsters, the business of moving oil depended mostly on men, wagons, horses, flatboats, and barrels. Pennsylvania led the world in oil production as demand for kerosene soared. In August 1866 a handful of America’s earliest independent oil producers met in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and agreed that henceforth, 42 gallons would constitute a barrel of oil. Today, a barrel’s refined products include about 20 gallons of gasoline, 12 gallons of diesel and 4 gallons of jet fuel and other products like liquefied petroleum gases and asphalt. The 42-gallon oil barrel was officially adopted in 1866. When filled with oil instead of fish or other commodities, a 42-gallon “tierce” weighed 300 pounds. The 42-gallon standard was adopted by the Petroleum Producers Association in 1872. Soon after America’s first oil discovery in 1859, oilmen met in northwestern Pennsylvania and decided a 42-gallon barrel was best for transporting oil.īy the 1860s, barges floated barrels of oil down the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh to be refined into a highly demanded product – kerosene for lamps. Overall, I’d say that the Top-Off seems like a nicely balanced jobsite-friendly design. The pricing is very different – $260 for the Anker and $99 for the Top-Off plus the price of whatever M18 battery you want to power it with.Ĭompare: Anker Battery Generator via Amazon The Milwaukee Top-Off can deliver 175W via AC, 45W via USB-C PD, and 2.4A via USB-A (~12W). It recharges via included AC adapter, optional USB-C PD charger, or optional DC output solar charger. The Anker has a display and polished consumer-friendly enclosure. All together, the Anker can deliver a maximum power output of 100W. Its AC port can deliver 100W max, and its car outlet port 60W max. Its USB-C port can deliver 30W max, and its USB-A ports 15W max (likely combined). The Anker has more ports – a 12V auto DC port and a second USB-A port. It features 213Wh of charge capacity, or nearly the equivalent of a Milwaukee M18 HD 12.0Ah battery (216 Wh). Let’s take a look at that model, for context. Perhaps the closest comparison to the Milwaukee M18 Top-Off is the Anker Powerhouse 200. There aren’t a lot of battery-powered multi-port and AC port adapters out there. There are those whose cancer reached an advanced stage before they could get a doctor to take them seriously. However, that excuse doesn’t hold water – there is a large overlap in heart attack symptoms between the sexes.Įlsewhere, social media and news reports are full of egregious examples of women being medically gaslit. This missed diagnosis is often explained by the fact that women’s heart attack symptoms are “strange and unpredictable” (compared with a man’s “normal” symptoms). One of the best-known examples relates to heart disease, where a woman’s symptoms are twice as likely as a man’s to be simply written off as mental illness. In many ways, the term gaslighting is an apt fit for medical settings, especially when it comes to the common refrain: “It’s all in your head.” Those who are socially, culturally, politically or economically marginalised don’t find that this experience suddenly changes when they walk through the clinic door. It is a painful reminder that medicine does not occupy a rarefied space apart from society and history. More often than not, gaslit patients are women, members of the LGBTQ community, people of colour and older adults. There is usually a clear power imbalance at play. Medical gaslighting refers to cases in which a healthcare practitioner imposes a pattern of questions, testing or diagnosis that runs counter or tangential to the history or symptoms the patient is describing or experiencing. The term also used in discussions about health. Politicians are accused of it, as are celebrities. Today, the term “gaslighting” is widely used to describe psychological manipulation, where a person is made to doubt their perception of reality. What her senses tell her is a lie – a sign of her steady descent into madness. He attempts to convince her that the gas lighting in their house, which the audience can see is flickering, is not really flickering. Gregory is intent on making Paula think she is going insane so that he can have her committed to a mental institution and claim her inheritance. Set in 1880s London, the story plays out in the upper-middle-class, gas-lit home of Gregory and Paula Anton. However, the ruse employed by its villain gave the work remarkable staying power. Gaslight, a psychological thriller starring Ingrid Bergman, was a box-office hit when it was released in 1944, but its time in the limelight could have ended there. Similarly, the full frame sensor is 1.3x larger than the APS-H sensor.) The maths… We multiply because the full-frame sensor is 1.6 times bigger than the APS-C sized sensor. The rest of the image falls outside the area of the APS-C sensor.įACT: All lenses produce circular images, but the sensor (or film negative) only collects the data that falls onto its rectangular surface area.Ī crop factor of 1.6x – often talked about with APS-C cameras – can be explained like this: If you are using a 50mm lens on an APS-C camera and you want to shoot the same scene with the same field-of-view with a full-frame camera you need a focal length of 50 x 1.6, which is 80mm. There is no change to the image created by the lens – it’s simply that the smaller sensor only captures the central area of the image. You could get an identical result by enlarging and cropping the full-frame image. It is a magnification effect, not a change of focal length. In fact, the APS-C image has been enlarged more than the full-frame image to match the display size. The result from the APS-C sensor is shown above and appears to show an increased telephoto effect. When you come to display an image to fill a computer screen or a print, the result from the full-frame sensor is shown above. The field-of-view is narrower, but nothing else changes. The end result is a smaller area captured, but exactly the same as the central area of the full frame image. An APS-C camera only records a part of the full image (as shown by the white box on the central image). A full-frame camera captures the full image. The original shot was taken with an EF 400mm lens. The focal length might not change, but what does change is the field-of-view. Use the same lens on a full frame camera and an APS-C camera, and you end up with results like those below. It doesn’t.įACT: Focal length is a characteristic of the lens and is not affected by the camera or sensor size. There is a lot of confusion about crop factors, extended reach and telephoto effects when using lenses on APS-C cameras.įirst, let’s dispel the myth that the focal length of a lens changes when switched between a full-frame camera and an APS-C camera. So what does this all mean for your photography? Crop refers to the fact that the image you get with the smaller sensor is a cropped part of the image obtained with the full frame sensor. The main reason for the introduction of the smaller sensor was cost – full frame sensors are expensive. Then, in 2000, along came a camera with an APS-C 'crop' sensor – the EOS D30. EF lenses, like the FD lens system that went before, gave full coverage to 35mm EOS film cameras, then subsequently full-frame – 36 x 24mm sensor – digital cameras. The EF lens mount was introduced in the same year that the EOS was announced – 1987. Terms like ‘crop factor’, 'extra reach’ and ‘equivalent focal length’ just aren’t helpful. This is exactly what happened – as far as we’re concerned – when Canon introduced the EF-S lens mount. We store the raw and unmodified data from the data sources. You can refer to them as the Raw layer in data architecture. Let’s first zoom in on the Landing, and Persisted Staging layers as these are closely related. We will look at these in more detail in a minute. This has changed significantly over the last few years and we need to cater for a variety of different data source types. 10-15 years ago most data sources for data analytics were relational databases and text files (usually exports from relational databases). They represent and store data that is generated through the business processes. The data sources are the operational systems of an organisation. Let’s first have a look at the architecture diagram.Īs you can see there are various vertical and horizontal layers. Finally we use the principles, apply them to the logical architecture and map it to the physical architecture where we talk about tools and vendors. In a second step we then outline some of the Sonra core principles that we use when evaluating a tool or vendor. You won’t see any reference to tools or vendors. If you are interested in our data architecture and data advisory services please contact us.įirst I will walk you through our logical architecture. It is bullet proof for the vast majority of data management use cases. First things firstĪt Sonra we have developed a reference enterprise data architecture over the years. It does not cover in detail various data integration scenarios and patterns such as Enterprise Application Integration. I should also say that the focus of this reference data architecture is for data analytics and data management use cases. My focus is on enterprise data architecture. While important we do not cover these areas as part of this blog post. There are other aspects to implementing a successful data analytics solution: the operating model, the project management approach, governance, processes and standards, skills etc. while Hadoop is a good fit for processing unstructured data in batch (it was built for this purpose) it is a poor fit for BI style queries (even though it can be shoehorned to do so). Having said that some tools are unquestionably a better fit for certain use cases than others, e.g. There is no hard connection between the two. I see this mistake being made frequently where people hear data warehouse and instinctively like a Pavlovian dog think relational database. You can implement a data warehouse on Hadoop but it does not make sense to say that a technology will replace a concept. The data warehouse is a concept whereas Hadoop is a technology. Separating the conceptual architecture from the implementation details will prevent you from making silly statements such as “Hadoop will replace the data warehouse”. What tools you select is highly dependent on your requirements, your organisation, preferences (build vs buy), budget, skills and much more. Often you will need multiple tools from multiple vendors to achieve your objectives. Some vendors and technologies will be a better fit for what you are trying to achieve than others. buy), budget, existing vendor relations, software license model, skills and much more. The types of tools you select are highly dependent on your requirements, your organisation, the skills you have, preferences (e.g. When we map the logical architecture to tools and vendors we need to take the context and requirements of each organisation into account. It brings the logical architecture to life. I call this secondary level of architecture the physical data architecture. How and where you implement the architecture is important but a secondary concern. A good architecture should be applicable to the cloud and on-premise. You can translate the logical architecture into any combination of tools and technologies. It is purely conceptual and not tied to a particular tool, approach (e.g. This is what I call logical data architecture. Reference data architecture on Snowflake (AWS) V2įirst and foremost data architecture is abstracted from tools and technologies.
